Communion was founded in 2022 by Tornike Gognadze first as a ritual grounded in the idea of coming together, linguistically and symbolically being one. In this spirit, the first gathering took place in June 2022, when 25 artists from Frankfurt am Main, Offenbach am Main, Berlin, Düsseldorf, and Copenhagen—18 of them students of the Städelschule—were invited to share a day of artistic exchange at Café Dalma in Frankfurt. Over the course of 12 hours, each participant was given up to 20 minutes to present their practice, opening a space for diverse artistic expressions, ideas, and emotions. The program, which stretched late into the night, was interwoven with pauses that encouraged informal encounters and spontaneous conversations. What began as a singular event soon became an annual tradition, each edition documented and published as part of its growing legacy.
By 2025, with an increasing sense of responsibility to provide structure and support for both the local community and the wider art scene, Gognadze initiated the next step: the founding of Communion Kunstverein, together with Linus Berg, Charlotte Berg, Dalwin Kryeziu, Deborah Nerlich, Carla Vollmers, and Ludvig Wilen. While Communion e.V. plans to continue hosting annual gatherings across Frankfurt, connecting the city’s artistic community with broader international contexts, the Verein also seeks to establish a permanent exhibition space in the city. With this step, Communion aims to create new initiatives to support emerging artists and to contribute to shaping both Frankfurt’s and the global cultural landscape. We hope to be part of meaningful shared experiences and a supporting structure for our colleagues.
